Introduction

This post discusses three distractions that hinder personal growth when left unchecked. These are common activities and habits that many of us have engaged with to varying degrees throughout our lives.

Reading The News

While there is technically nothing wrong with being informed about what goes on in the world, the vast majority of the news has no or very little relevance to our lives. Every single day we are bombarded with dozens of carefully constructed headlines that aim to suck us into the whirlpool of (mis)information.

The content provided in these articles is not just mostly irrelevant. It also puts us in an agitated and fearful state of mind. Examples abound: wars in distant countries, accidents, murders, scandalous misdeeds of politicians, pessimistic financial prognoses, and so on.

Anyone interested in self-improvement should consider reducing their consumption of the news. Completely abstaining from this activity may not be a feasible choice for some of us. Yet achieving moderation in this regard is perfectly possible.

For example, a business owner may only want to occasionally read the information pertaining to taxes, legal regulations, and other pertinent changes that may directly affect their business. Similarly, individuals planning long-distance or foreign travel may wish to check for any disruptions to public transportation beforehand.

Reading the news can also be delegated to another person. For instance, the business owner can hire an accountant responsible for keeping up with all the regulatory advancements. In a romantic relationship, one partner may occasionally check the news when necessary, while the other may opt to abstain entirely.

Excessive Social Media Use

Social media platforms can be a major distraction that reduces productivity and, frankly, wastes a lot of time that could be spent more effectively. The constant dopamine hits of updates, likes, and comments create a false sense of achievement and social connection. This flood of information diverts attention from other, more meaningful personal goals and tasks.

Moreover, looking at meticulously curated social media feeds can also lead to unhealthy comparisons and feelings of inadequacy. This is particularly impactful when comparing oneself to people who appear to have more interesting or exciting lives.

In reality, however, people typically show only the best aspects of their lives on social media. Interestingly enough, when they do mention flaws or imperfections, it is often just to attract more attention or sympathy.

Entrepreneurs, artists, and other freelancers should be particularly wary of excessive social media use. While social media enables promotion and the formation of uplifting network connections, it cannot be relied upon exclusively.

To address this possible problem, one may want to consider setting specific time blocks for social media use and logging out when they are not actively using it.

Overindulgence in Entertainment

Engaging in various forms of entertainment, such as watching TV shows, movies, or playing video games, can offer several benefits. These activities can provide valuable opportunities for relaxation and stress relief, helping one unwind from the demands of daily life. Additionally, they can serve as a refreshing source of inspiration and creativity, providing new perspectives and ideas.

When left unchecked, however, the habit of indulging in entertainment can lead to significant problems over time. Observing individuals who are addicted to video games, for instance, reveals that they often make numerous excuses for their behaviour.

Some claim they want to improve their skills in a particular game, deeming it a productive use of time. The issue, however, is that video games do not reflect the real world, and progress within them does not translate into positive changes in one’s actual life.

Similarly, watching television and following fictional characters can create a false sense of engagement or satisfaction. This diversion often prevents individuals from addressing their own challenges and pursuing real, meaningful improvements in their lives.

To manage leisure time effectively, it is crucial to set clear boundaries and remember not to forget to allocate ample time for personal growth and productivity. Moreover, finding a friend who can help hold one accountable can be beneficial.

Instead of spending excessive time on video games, one may want to consider engaging in real-life activities like team sports or socialising with friends. These alternatives offer more tangible benefits and contribute to a more balanced and fulfilling lifestyle.
