Methodology
Can astrology predict narcissism? To find out, I built a database of 101 public figures born between the late 19th and late 20th century, all of whom either carry an official NPD diagnosis or have extensive, multi-decade, multi-source documentation pointing unmistakably at Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Selection criteria were strict: behaviour had to be pervasive across all life domains, documented over decades, and not better explained by psychosis, bipolar disorder, or addiction. Birth data required Rodden AA rating where possible; where not available, only charts with no planets at sign thresholds were included. Ascendant analysis was omitted to avoid introducing rectification error. Sun-Mercury, Sun-Venus, and Mercury-Venus conjunctions were excluded from aspect counts due to orbital proximity. Tropical Zodiac was used for calculating planetary positions.
Here is what the data actually shows when we use astrology to predict narcissism.
The Sun: Identity and the Narcissistic Core
The highest Sun placements in the charts of narcissists were Gemini and Aquarius (13 each), followed by Leo (12) and Taurus (11). The lowest were Libra (2), Aries (4), and Scorpio (6).
Leo ranking third is the first stereotype to fall. Gemini and Aquarius, both signs associated with intellectual detachment and self-referential mental frameworks, outperformed the sign most commonly associated with narcissism. Meanwhile Libra at just 2 out of 101 is a striking suppressor, and Aries, a sign typically associated with selfishness, barely registers. As a general rule, the data suggests that exalted planets neither aggravate nor suppress narcissistic tendencies.
Sun conjunct Mars and Sun conjunct Saturn (12 each) were the strongest aggravating aspects, followed by Sun conjunct Rahu (10). Sun conjunct Ketu was a clear suppressor at just 4. The influence of Ketu on the Sun dissolves the attachment to identity that narcissism requires, eroding the very foundation the false self needs to maintain itself.
The Moon: Emotional Wiring of Narcissism
Moon in Aries dominated at 17 out of 101, which is a remarkably high concentration. Capricorn followed at 13, then Leo and Virgo at 11 each. The lowest scores went to Gemini and Taurus (4 each).
This is where the emotional architecture of narcissism becomes visible. Moon in Aries produces reactive, volatile, and self-centred emotional responses. Moon in Capricorn suppresses emotional vulnerability and replaces it with control. The low Taurus score is worth noting: the most stable, grounded lunar placement (the Moon is exalted in Taurus) appears to be protective against NPD.
Moon conjunct Saturn (13), Moon conjunct Rahu (12), and Moon conjunct Ketu (12) were the strongest aggravating aspects. The nodes destabilising the Moon, combined with Saturn compressing it, create the emotional deprivation pattern that clinical literature identifies as central to narcissistic formation.
Mars: Aggression and Drive
Mars in Cancer led at 14, followed by Leo (11) and Virgo (10). The lowest was Aquarius at 5.
Mars in Cancer is debilitated in Vedic astrology. In this sign, Mars cannot express aggression directly. Therefore, it is turned inward and then redirected through manipulation, control, and passive-aggressive strategies. This is the engine of covert narcissism.
The standout conjunction finding across the entire study: Mars conjunct Venus at 15 was the single highest conjunction score for any planetary pair. This permutation of desire, aggression, and relational energy seems to be one of the most reliable markers that we can use in astrology to predict narcissism.
Mercury: The Mind
Mercury showed a rather flat distribution of points, with Taurus, Pisces, and Capricorn slightly elevated (11 each) and Aquarius and Libra lowest (5 each). This planet appears to be less structurally important to NPD formation than other celestial bodies.
One suppressor worth mentioning: Mercury conjunct Ketu at just 4. The influence of Ketu on Mercury produces a mind that doubts and overthinks. Naturally, an individual who habitually second-guesses themselves tends to pause, collect enough information, consider others, and hold back from the impulsive and selfish actions that characterise typical narcissists.
Venus: Relationships and Supply
Venus in Aries and Taurus led (12 each), followed by Cancer (10). Meanwhile, Venus in Libra and Scorpio were lowest (5 each).
Venus in its own sign of Taurus ranking high while Venus in its other domicile of Libra ranks lowest is an interesting split. Taurus Venus fixates on possession and acquisition of relational supply. Libra Venus, oriented towards reciprocity and aesthetic balance, appears protective.
Venus conjunct Mars (15) again tops the conjunction list. Venus conjunct Rahu (11) was also elevated, pointing to obsessive, insatiable relational hunger.
Jupiter: Expansion and Belief
Jupiter in Scorpio led at 12, with Gemini, Pisces, and Leo at 10. On the converse side, Jupiter in Virgo was lowest at 5. The overall distribution was relatively flat, making Jupiter a moderate rather than primary contributor.
Jupiter conjunct Ketu (12) stood out as an oddly aggravating factor, which can be analysed further. Jupiter gives a person their sense of right and wrong, their connection to ethics, meaning, and higher principles. Ketu dissolves attachment to whatever it touches. When Ketu influences Jupiter, the individual loses real connection to the moral content while retaining the expansive confidence and sense of being right. They believe in their own righteousness without actually being anchored to any ethical substance. The conviction remains but the conscience underneath it empties out.
Saturn: Structure and Control
Saturn in Gemini (13), Scorpio (12), and Capricorn (12) led, while six signs tied at 6. The distribution of Saturn was even across the lower half, with concentration only at the top.
Saturn conjunct Moon (13) was the top aggravating aspect, reinforcing the emotional deprivation pattern identified in the Moon analysis.
The Nodes: Rahu and Ketu
The lunar nodes add a karmic dimension to predict narcissism through astrology. Ketu in Pisces (13) and Libra (12) ranked highest, which is surprising. Ketu in Scorpio and Taurus were lowest (4 and 6). The nodal axis of Pisces-Virgo and Libra-Aries appears most associated with NPD, while Scorpio-Taurus was least.
The highest markers deserve a longer explanation. Ketu in Libra carries the residue of past-life reliance on transactional relating. The soul enters this life already fluent in evaluating what others are worth, measuring reciprocity, and keeping score. This looks like social skill but the underlying orientation is mercantile: every relationship is an exchange, every kindness has a ledger entry. When this karmic default combines with other NPD markers, the person deploys relational intelligence entirely in service of self.
Meanwhile, Rahu in Virgo points to a weak karmic foundation around rules, procedures, and systems of accountability. The soul is hungry to master the Virgo domain of order and regulation but has no past-life competence to draw on. This creates someone who either obsessively imposes rules on others while exempting themselves, or treats all systems of accountability as obstacles to be manipulated.
Hot and Cold: Two Engines of Narcissism
The data points to two distinct astrological profiles.
The “hot” narcissist is built on fire and assertion: Moon in Aries, Mars conjunct Venus, Sun in Leo, or Mars in Leo. This produces the grandiose, overt type. The entitlement is visible, the rage is explosive, and the supply-seeking is shameless.
The “cold” narcissist runs on earth and shadow: Moon in Capricorn, Mars in Cancer, Saturn conjunct Moon, Sun in Aquarius or Gemini. This produces the covert, calculating type. The entitlement is hidden behind intellectual superiority or victimhood, the rage is controlled and strategic, the supply-seeking is disguised as detachment.
Both types share the same wound. The data consistently points to lunar damage, specifically Saturn, Rahu, or Ketu afflicting the Moon, as the common foundation. The Sun sign and Mars placement then determine how that wound gets expressed.
Conclusion
Leo sits third, behind Gemini and Aquarius. Aries, the sign of selfishness in popular astrology, actually appears protective for the Sun and ranks low for Mars as well. Libra is the clearest suppressor across multiple planets. And Mercury, the planet of the mind and communication, matters far less than other planets.
Narcissism, astrologically, is fundamentally an emotional injury (Moon) expressed through distorted desire (Venus-Mars) and reinforced by rigid identity (Sun). The mind follows where the wound leads.
A single placement from this study means nothing on its own and even two rarely produce a narcissistic personality. However, when several of these factors converge in one chart, there is a high likelihood of such self-centred and self-aggrandising tendencies. This study confirms that astrology can predict narcissism.
